The Yobe State Government, in collaboration with security agencies, has reopened the Kukareta and Buniyadi markets, which were recently shut due to security concerns.
The markets, situated in Gujba and Damaturu Local Government Areas, were initially closed to disrupt suspected food supply chains to insurgents terrorising local communities.
Dahiru Abdulsalam, Security Adviser to Governor Mai Mala Buni, announced the reopening during a press briefing after the Yobe State Security Meeting, chaired by Deputy Governor Idi Barde-Gubana at the Government House in Damaturu.
“Following a review of the state’s security situation, I’m pleased to inform you that two of the three markets closed due to insecurity—those in Kukareta and Buniyadi—have now reopened,” he stated.
However, he clarified that the restriction on the sale of Premium Motor Spirit (petrol) between 6 p.m. and 6 a.m. remains in effect. Authorities will arrest any violators.
Abdulsalam also revealed that the state government will establish a task force to monitor and address encroachment on farmlands and cattle routes by both crop farmers and herders. He said the initiative aims to prevent clashes, which have already declined significantly in recent months.
