Ahead of the 2027 elections, Peter Obi, the 2023 presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP), clarified that no merger agreement has been reached with the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), or any other political party.

Speaking at a press conference in Abuja on Thursday morning, the former governor of Anambra State emphasized that no formal pact has been established with other political groups.

Obi called on all Nigerians committed to the nation’s progress to unite within the political space and work towards defeating the All Progressives Congress (APC) in 2027, accusing the ruling party of mismanaging the country’s resources.

Obi also expressed concern over the security situation in the country, describing it as tragic, with countless Nigerians losing their lives to banditry, terrorism, and kidnapping for ransom.

He pointed out that corruption remains rampant in Nigeria, contributing to the high cost of governance and a significant increase in public debt under the current administration of President Bola Tinubu and the APC.

The former Anambra governor accused government officials of deliberately mismanaging public funds in 2024, citing frequent foreign trips as a major example.

In the 2023 presidential election, Tinubu emerged victorious in 12 of Nigeria’s 36 states, securing a total of 8,794,726 votes—nearly two million more than his closest rival, Atiku Abubakar of the PDP.

Atiku, who had contested the presidency six times, received 6,984,520 votes, while Obi, a first-time candidate, garnered an unprecedented 6,101,533 votes. Rabiu Kwankwaso, of the NNPP and former governor of Kano State, finished fourth, winning his home state of Kano with 1,496,687 votes.

Interestingly, both Obi and Kwankwaso were once members of the PDP, citing irreconcilable differences as their reasons for leaving the party prior to the election.
