The Bauchi State Governor, Bala Mohammed has officially defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the Allied Peoples Movement (APM), alongside loyalists aligned with the Tanimu Turaki-led faction.
The announcement was made on Saturday at the Bauchi Government House, where the governor was received by APM National Chairman Yusuf Dantalle and other party officials.
Mohammed said the move followed extensive consultations and was aimed at strengthening political positioning ahead of the 2027 elections.
“After extensive consultation, we have taken a firm and strategic decision to join the Allied Peoples Movement (APM),” he stated, noting that the decision was driven by the need to provide a “credible and effective political platform” for his supporters.
The governor, who was elected under the PDP in 2019 and re-elected in 2023, expressed gratitude to the party for its role in his political journey but emphasised the need for a new direction amid ongoing internal challenges.
His defection comes at a time of deepening crisis within the PDP and effectively leaves Seyi Makinde as one of the few remaining PDP governors.
During the event, Dantalle formally presented Mohammed with his APM membership card, symbolising his official entry into the party.
The move follows weeks of speculation and consultations with stakeholders across different political platforms, including the African Democratic Congress and the All Progressives Congress, before settling on the APM.
Mohammed’s exit marks a significant shift in Nigeria’s opposition landscape as political realignments intensify ahead of the next general elections.
