Enugu State Governor, Peter Mbah, announced on Thursday the approval of ₦80,000 as the new minimum wage for workers in the state.
The governor shared this news on his X account, stating that the new minimum wage will take effect from October.
“I have just approved a minimum wage of ₦80,000 for Enugu workers, effective October 2024,” the post read. “We appreciate the hard work and sacrifices of the state’s workforce and will continue to prioritise their welfare in line with our campaign promises. Tomorrow is here.”
Mbah’s decision follows a similar announcement made a day earlier by Akwa Ibom Governor Umo Eno, who also set the minimum wage for civil servants in his state at ₦80,000.
Recently, several governors have approved new minimum wages for their workers. On 16 October, Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu raised the minimum wage for public sector workers in Lagos to ₦85,000. Two days later, Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara also approved a minimum wage of ₦85,000 for civil servants in his state.
In July, President Bola Tinubu signed a minimum wage bill into law, raising the baseline pay for workers from ₦30,000 to ₦70,000.
