The national leader of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), Rabiu Kwankwaso, has announced that the Kwankwasiyya movement has designated January 23 as “World Betrayal Day”.
Kwankwaso made the declaration while addressing his supporters at his residence in Kano, against the backdrop of the planned defection of Abba Yusuf, the state governor, to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
According to the NNPP leader, the Kwankwasiyya movement will henceforth observe January 23 as a day to remember individuals who betrayed the group.
“I saw multiple talks regarding betrayal and many more on social media,” he said in the Hausa language.
“But there was one post by someone who said there’s a need to declare 23rd January as World Betrayal Day.
“Because of that as a leader of this movement, I am now in support of the 23rd of January as a Betrayal Day. We will now be celebrating that day everywhere.”
On Friday, January 23, Yusuf officially resigned from the NNPP, the party under which he was elected governor in 2023.
The Kano governor defected alongside 21 members of the Kano State House of Assembly, eight members of the House of Representatives, and all 44 local government area chairmen in the state.
Yusuf attributed his departure to “deepening internal crises” and “prolonged leadership disputes” within the NNPP.
His resignation followed days after a meeting with President Bola Tinubu at the State House in Abuja.
Kwankwaso had played a key role in Yusuf’s emergence as Kano governor in 2023 through the Kwankwasiyya movement.
However, reports have suggested that the relationship between the two politicians had deteriorated in recent times.
