PDP wins all 21 LG seats in Adamawa

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has secured all 21 council seats in the recently concluded Local Government (LG) election in Adamawa State.

According to the results released by the State Independent Electoral Commission, the PDP also won all councillorship seats in the 226 wards across the North-East state, except for one seat in Demsa Ward of Demsa Local Government Area, which was won by the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP).

Mohammed Umar, the Chairman of the Electoral Commission, announced on Sunday evening at the commission’s headquarters in Yola that the ruling party achieved an overwhelming victory in all 21 local government councils of the state. He noted that out of the 19 registered political parties in the state, 12 participated in the election.

This Adamawa local government election was the first following the Supreme Court’s decision to grant financial autonomy to the third tier of government, mandating the Federal Government to directly allocate 20.60% of monthly funds to the 774 LGs in their exclusive accounts rather than through accounts controlled by governors.

The Supreme Court’s landmark judgment on Thursday also prohibited governors from dissolving democratically elected local government councils.
