Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour, widely known as GRV, has announced his intention to contest the Lagos State governorship election in 2027.
Rhodes-Vivour previously ran for governor in 2023 under the Labour Party (LP) but was defeated by the incumbent, Babajide Sanwo-Olu of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
In an interview on Politics Today aired by Channels Television, Rhodes-Vivour affirmed his commitment to his political ambitions. However, he did not confirm whether he would remain with the Labour Party or switch to another platform.
“By God’s grace, yes,” he responded when asked about his 2027 candidacy. He stressed the importance of opposition parties uniting to counter what he described as a “state capture” in the country.
“For now, my job is to ensure that I have a strong party – Labour Party,” he added.
Criticism of Tinubu’s Reforms
During the programme, Rhodes-Vivour also criticised President Bola Tinubu’s economic reforms, which include the removal of fuel subsidies and the floating of the naira currency.
He argued that the policies disproportionately benefit a select group of individuals close to the government while ordinary Nigerians bear the brunt of the economic challenges.
“The people are experiencing unprecedented hardship. Over 70 per cent of incomes are spent on transportation and food, leaving little for accommodation,” he said.
Rhodes-Vivour highlighted what he called a culture of wastefulness in government, saying it contrasts sharply with the economic struggles faced by most Nigerians.
“How many Nigerians can say they are benefitting from any reform right now?” he questioned, urging for more inclusive and equitable policies.
