The governor of Rivers, Siminalayi Fubara, says he remains optimistic about the state’s capacity to surmount governance difficulties, stating that divine backing will uphold its leadership, institutions and people.
Fubara, who was represented by his deputy, Ngozi Odu, made the remarks on Sunday at the 2026 Holy Ghost rally organised by the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG) at the Adokiye Amiesimaka Stadium in Port Harcourt, the state capital.
He said the state government derives strength from its trust in God, describing the rally’s theme, “The all-sufficient God”, as both timely and comforting.
“With the Almighty God on our side, our challenges are surmountable, and our future remains hopeful,” the governor said.
According to him, the theme underscores the belief that even in uncertain times, God remains a constant source of wisdom, strength, provision and grace.
He added that when human capacity is exhausted, God’s sufficiency takes over.
Fubara praised the RCCG for its sustained prayers for Rivers state and Nigeria, commending the church for fostering moral values, unity and faith among the people.
In his sermon drawn from Genesis 17:1, Enoch Adeboye, general overseer of the RCCG, described God as all-sufficient and able to meet every human need.
Adeboye said the Creator of all things also possesses the power to mend and restore them.
He noted that while human efforts, including medical solutions, can reach a limit, there are situations where only divine intervention can turn around seemingly hopeless circumstances.
Adesoji Oni, pastor in charge of the Rivers family of the RCCG, said the Port Harcourt Holy Ghost rally, which began in 2015, has evolved into an annual event with notable impact on the state.
Oni said the rally has attracted thousands to the faith and positively affected lives both spiritually and physically.
He added that the church has widened its scope beyond preaching, pointing to its Christian social responsibility projects such as skills acquisition centres, maternity facilities, a rehabilitation centre for people struggling with substance abuse, and an innovative mind hub across the state.
Rivers state has been facing a political crisis arising from a prolonged rift between Fubara and Nyesom Wike, minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
On January 8, the Rivers house of assembly initiated impeachment proceedings against Fubara and his deputy.
The lawmakers commenced the move after Major Jack, leader of the assembly, read allegations of gross misconduct against Fubara, backed by 26 members of the house.
The political tension in the state intensified shortly after President Bola Tinubu lifted the six-month emergency rule imposed on Rivers and following Fubara’s defection from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
