Police officers in Borno State on Monday took to the streets of Maiduguri, the state capital to protest unpaid salaries and allowances.

The officers are protesting their unpaid allowances spanning over six months and barricaded major roads around the police headquarters.

The officers also fired some gun shots, making commuters scamper for safety.

Further reports show that they were fully armed but stopped from entering the police complex.

According to some of the officers, they have not been paid their allowances since January when they were deployed to the state on special operation.

They also said they were subjected to ill-treatment as they slept in the corridor of the office on returning from duty at night.

The Borno Police Commissioner Damian Chukwu, said he was aware of the protest, adding that the delayed payment may be connected to the late signing of the budget.
