Ex-Nigeria international Emmanuel Amuneke failed to secure victory for Tanzania who lost 3-0 away to Cape Verde in the third round of matches of the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier.

It was Amuneke’s first defeat and second game since taking charge of the East African side.

With the defeat, Tanzania are left in the bottom of Group L with a point and face an uphill task of qualifying for the tournament next year in Cameroon.

In his first game, the ex-Nigeria international led the Taifa Stars to a draw against Uganda last month.

The last time Tanzania qualified for the Cup of Nations was in 1980 which Nigeria hosted.

They however have another chance of redeeming their image when they host Cape Verde in the reverse fixture next Tuesday at the National Stadium in Dar Es Salaam.

Cape Verde who were at the Nations Cup in 2015 opened their goals account through Ricardo Gomes.

Gomes grabbed a brace in the 16th and 23rd minutes respectively, while Stopira added third in the 85th.

In other group fixture Uganda will host Lesotho.
