2026 WCQ: Zimbabwe players promised N300m each to beat Nigeria

The Super Eagles’ journey to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup has taken another unexpected turn, as Zimbabwe’s players have been promised a $150,000 cash reward if they manage to secure surprising victories against both the Cheetahs of Benin and Nigeria’s Super Eagles in the qualifiers.

Initially, the Warriors, along with their technical crew and support staff, were set to receive $150,000 from the Zimbabwean government if they defeated Benin on Thursday. However, the match ended in a 2-2 draw.

An additional $150,000 has now been pledged if Zimbabwe can pull off a shock win against Nigeria’s Super Eagles in Uyo. While this incentive serves as motivation for the Warriors, it could also be perceived as a slight to the three-time African champions, given the relatively modest amount.

Nigeria’s path to the expanded 2026 FIFA World Cup, co-hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico, has been far from smooth. The Super Eagles have yet to secure a single victory in their four qualifiers and currently sit fifth in Group C, trailing behind Rwanda, South Africa, Benin, Lesotho, and Zimbabwe.
