AC Milan have parted ways with manager Paulo Fonseca after just six months at the helm, following a 1-1 home draw against Roma.
The result leaves the Rossoneri in eighth place in Serie A, trailing joint-leaders Atalanta and Napoli by 14 points.
In the Champions League, Milan currently sit 12th in the 36-team table, having won four of their six group-stage matches but losing the other two.
Fonseca was appointed in June as the successor to Stefano Pioli, who had led Milan to a second-place finish last season and secured their first Serie A title in 11 years in 2022.
“The club extends its gratitude to Paulo for his great professionalism and wishes him the very best in his future endeavours,” read a statement on Milan’s website.
Speaking to reporters as he left San Siro on Sunday night, Fonseca appeared to confirm he had been dismissed.
“Yes, it’s true. I’m out,” Fonseca said from his car outside the stadium. “That’s life. I did everything I could.”
AC Milan are set to face Juventus in the first leg of the Italian Super Cup semi-finals on 3 January, with the return leg scheduled for 18 January.
Italian media reports indicate that former Porto manager Sergio Conceição is likely to succeed Paulo Fonseca as head coach.
Conceição, a former midfielder who played for Lazio, Parma, and Inter Milan, departed Porto in June after a successful six-year stint with the Portuguese club.
