The Gabonese Football Federation has announced that experienced forward Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang will not be available for the team’s opening fixture against Cameroon at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.
The 36-year-old, who has long been Gabon’s talisman, picked up an injury during Marseille’s Ligue 1 victory over Monaco on Sunday. As a result, the federation confirmed that Aubameyang will remain in France to undergo treatment before linking up with the national squad.
“Olympique de Marseille’s medical staff requested that Aubameyang receive medical treatment in Marseille after consulting with the national team’s medical staff,” a federation statement explained.
“The player is unavailable for the 24 December match against Cameroon. Depending on his clinical and imaging progress, participation in the 24 December match against Mozambique is possible.” Both fixtures will take place in Agadir.
Gabon, who face defending champions Ivory Coast on 31 December in Marrakech, may also be forced into a defensive adjustment, with Metz centre-back Michel Mboula a doubt for the tournament due to a thigh problem.
