Nigeria’s Super Eagles interim coach, Augustine Eguavoen, has called up 23 players for the Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers against Benin Republic and Rwanda.
Among the players selected for the fixtures is Galatasaray’s star striker, Victor Osimhen, who missed the last match against Libya due to injury.
Osimhen returned from injury and scored in Galatasaray’s 3-0 victory away at Antalyaspor in the Turkish Super Lig on 19 October. He also netted the winning goal in Galatasaray’s derby against Besiktas on 28 October.
Real Sociedad’s Umar Sadiq also returns to the Super Eagles squad after a period out.
The matches against Benin and Rwanda will be the final qualifiers for the AFCON in Morocco next year.
The match against Benin Republic, scheduled for matchday 5, will be held at Stade Félix Houphouët-Boigny on 14 November, with kick-off at 8 p.m. Nigerian time. The matchday 6 fixture against Rwanda will be played at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium in Uyo on 18 November.
With two games left to play, Nigeria leads Group D of the qualifiers with 10 points after the CAF awarded Nigeria three goals and three points for the abandoned match against Libya.
The Eagles refused to play after being stranded at a remote Libyan airport for half a day before the match. Players and officials were stuck at the airport for hours without access to food or the internet as they prepared for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifier against the Mediterranean Knights.
It took diplomatic intervention and appeals on social media for the team to finally secure clearance to leave Libya.
