The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has unveiled the provisional lists for teams set to compete in the upcoming African Cup of Nations in Ivory Coast in January. Captain Ahmed Musa has secured a spot on the 41-man list for the Super Eagles.
The name of Maduka Okoye, the goalkeeper from Udinese in Italy who guarded the Nigerian team in the last AFCON in Cameroon, was notably absent from the list released by CAF on Wednesday.
In addition to Captain Musa, other players who have been absent from the team for a period but secured spots in the provisional squad include William Troost-Ekong, Zaidu Sanusi, and Paul Onuachu.
The list will undergo further trimming to 27 players and must be submitted by the January 3, 2024, deadline. This marks an increase of four players from the usual 23-player roster for the tournament. Notably, CAF emphasizes that the inclusion of the additional players in the final list is an option, not an obligation.
According to CAF, if a team submits a final squad ranging from 24 to 27 players, only 23 will be eligible for selection in each match during the tournament.
Additionally, it was specified that a player in the ultimate squad can only be substituted in the event of a severe injury, provided that this replacement is confirmed by a medical certificate approved by the CAF Medical Committee at least 24 hours before the team’s inaugural match.
The conclusive competition is scheduled to occur from January 13 to February 11, 2024, spanning across the Ivorian cities of Abidjan, Bouake, Korhogo, San Pedro, and Yamoussoukro.
