AFCON winning Fiorentina forward Christian Kouame has malaria

Fiorentina’s Serie A side reports that forward Christian Kouame has been hospitalized after contracting malaria.

Kouame, aged 26, was a member of the recent Africa Cup of Nations-winning Ivory Coast team.

His Italian club announced that he tested positive for the disease after feeling unwell on Tuesday night.

“The player has been hospitalised for treatment and his condition will be re-assessed over the coming days,” added Fiorentina.

Kouame participated in four matches for his country during their hosting and championship-winning run, culminating in a 2-1 victory over Nigeria in the final.

His final appearance occurred during a 2-1 triumph against Mali in the quarter-finals.

This season, Kouame has featured 22 times for Fiorentina, registering one goal.
