AFN opens Olympic camp in Abuja
The Athletics Federation of Nigeria’s camp for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics opened in Abuja on Sunday, The PUNCH reports.
Secretary-General of the AFN, Adisa Beyioku, in a letter dated July 2 and addressed to the Director, Federation Elite Athletes Department in the Ministry of Youth and Sports Development, invited athletes and coaches to the Olympics camp.
A total of 25 athletes and 10 coaches were invited to camp ahead of the Tokyo Games.
Blessing Okagbare, Grace Nwokocha and Rosemary Chukwuma will feature in the women’s 100m, while Okagbare, Nwokocha and Favour Ofili will take part in the women’s 200m at the Olympics.
Tobi Amusan will compete in the women’s 100m hurdles, with Ese Brume in long jump and Ruth Usoro in triple jump.
The hammer event has Annette Echiwunke, while Chioma Onyekwere and Patience Okon-George will take part in the discus and 400m respectively.
The women’s 4x100m relay team will has Okagbare, Nwokocha, Chukwuma, Knowledge Omovoh and Ofili, while Tina Godbless will serve as the alternate member.
The men’s team will have Divine Oduduru, Raymond Ekekvwo, Enoch Adegoke and Usheoritse Itsekiri in the 100m, while Oduduru is the sole athlete in the 200m.
Also, Chukwuebuka Enekweshi will feature in the discus event; Oduduru , Ekevwo, Adegoke, Itsekiri, Oghenebrume Godson and Jerry Jakpa are in the waiting list for the men’s 4x100m after failing to qualify for the Olympics.
The mixed 4x400m team has Chidi Okezie, Samson Nathaniel, Ifeanyi Ojeli, Okon-George, Omovoh, Imaobong Nse-Oko, Glory Okon and Yinka Ajayi.
The coaches are Rotimi Obajimi, Kayode Yaya, Samuel Onikeku, Gabriel Okon, Opuana Gabriel and George Obiano.
Some athletes also have personal coaches who would join the team in camp.
The coaches are Golding Clarke attached to Amusan, Ayokunle Odelusi (Adegoke), Rana Reider (Okagbare) and Collin Tuner (Oduduru).
