Nigeria will have at least two athletes at the 2027 World Athletics Championships in Beijing, with Kanyinsola Ajayi and Ezekiel Nathaniel already meeting the required standards.

Ajayi punched his ticket in the men’s 100m after finishing in 9.94 seconds at the Silesia Diamond League in Poland.

The 21-year-old has continued to enjoy a strong 2026 campaign, matching Nigeria’s 9.84-second record, securing the NCAA title and defeating reigning world champion Oblique Seville in notable races.

Nathaniel, meanwhile, achieved the qualifying mark in the men’s 400m hurdles with a time of 47.83 seconds.

The Commonwealth Games champion and national record holder owns a best of 47.11 seconds, which he posted at the 2025 World Championships in Tokyo.

Their qualification means Nigeria currently has two athletes guaranteed a place at the 2027 global championships.

More Nigerian athletes could join them, as the qualification period remains open for competitors to attain the required standards ahead of the Beijing championships.
