Amorim praises Garnacho’s Transformation at Man Utd

Ruben Amorim says Manchester United winger Alejandro Garnacho has impressed him by changing “everything” since being dropped for the derby victory over Manchester City.

Amorim made the surprise decision to leave out Garnacho and Marcus Rashford from the squad for United’s 2-1 win at the Etihad Stadium in December.

While Rashford remains out of favour and has hinted at leaving Old Trafford, Amorim has urged the England forward to improve his standards if he wants to return.

In contrast, Garnacho has responded positively, ignoring speculation over his future and winning Amorim over with his improved attitude and performances.

The 20-year-old continued his resurgence on Thursday, coming off the bench to assist Kobbie Mainoo’s goal in United’s 2-0 Europa League victory over FCSB.

Amorim: Garnacho Has Changed Everything

“He changed right away since that game against City,” Amorim said.

“The way he understands things and realises that I just want to help him, I just want to win games. He has changed in everything – his attitude when we speak, his recovery, his approach.”

Garnacho has often been used as an impact substitute under Amorim, after featuring more regularly under Erik ten Hag.

The former Sporting Lisbon manager admitted he has pushed Garnacho hard in an effort to draw out more consistent performances.

“He understands that I am a demanding coach, and sometimes it’s tough,” Amorim added.

“But he knows it is never meant negatively – it’s always to help him improve.”

Mainoo Shines Amid Transfer Talk

Meanwhile, 19-year-old midfielder Kobbie Mainoo produced a man-of-the-match display against FCSB, scoring a goal and providing an assist.

There has been speculation that United could sell Mainoo to meet financial requirements, but Amorim appears keen to develop him in a more attacking role.

Downplaying any contract concerns, Amorim said:

“I don’t think it is about the contract. Everyone in England knows he’s a very good player.

“He was in the European Championship final, and in this new position, he looks more comfortable. If they are happy, they play better. Simple as that.”

United face Crystal Palace in the Premier League on Sunday.
