Former Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim is reportedly close to making a return to management after reaching an agreement to become the next head coach of AC Milan.

The 41-year-old Portuguese tactician, who has been without a club since leaving Manchester United in January, is expected to replace Massimiliano Allegri at the San Siro.

According to Portuguese publication A Bola, Amorim has agreed to a deal that will run until 2028, with an option for an additional year.

The report said Amorim had initially planned to take a break from management following his departure from Old Trafford, but the opportunity to lead the seven-time European champions persuaded him to return sooner than expected.

Under the proposed agreement, Amorim is set to earn a net salary of €3.5 million per season, with additional bonuses linked to winning trophies and qualifying for the UEFA Champions League, a competition Milan have failed to reach in the last two seasons.

Milan reportedly considered appointing Matthias Jaissle, currently in charge of Al-Ahli, but Amorim’s availability as a free agent made him the preferred option.

While the deal is said to be nearing completion, final approval is still required from Gerry Cardinale, founder of RedBird Capital and owner of the Italian club.

Once the agreement is formally approved, Amorim is expected to travel to Milan to sign the contract and begin preparations for the new season.

His swift return to management could also ease Manchester United’s financial obligations following his departure. Reports suggest the Premier League side had been facing a substantial compensation package covering the remainder of Amorim’s contract and his coaching staff.

By taking up the Milan role, the Portuguese manager is expected to forgo a significant portion of that compensation, providing a financial boost for United as they continue under the leadership of Michael Carrick.
