Tottenham Hotspur have secured the signing of Scotland captain Andy Robertson on a free transfer after his exit from Liverpool.

According to BBC Sport, the 32-year-old left-back will officially become a Spurs player on July 1 when his Liverpool contract expires, bringing an end to a trophy-laden seven-year stay at Anfield.

Robertson had already confirmed he would be leaving Liverpool this summer, allowing Tottenham to snap up the experienced defender without paying a transfer fee.

Spurs had previously explored a move for Robertson during the January transfer window while Thomas Frank was still in charge. Although both clubs reached an agreement, Liverpool pulled out of the deal after being unable to bring back Kostas Tsimikas from his loan spell at Roma.

Following their successful fight to avoid relegation under new manager Roberto De Zerbi, Tottenham have now strengthened their squad with one of the Premier League’s most experienced full-backs.

“Andy is someone I’ve admired for a number of years and he will bring outstanding technical qualities, experience, leadership and mentality to our team,” De Zerbi said.

“He is a proven winner at the highest level over a long period and is someone who can be a big player for us, both on and off the pitch.”

Robertson joined Liverpool from Hull City in 2017 and made 378 appearances for the Reds. During his time on Merseyside, he lifted two Premier League titles, the UEFA Champions League, two League Cups and the FA Cup.

The defender remains a vital figure for Scotland and is expected to captain his country at this summer’s World Cup, adding to his tally of 92 international appearances.

Tottenham sporting director Johan Lange also welcomed the signing.

“His quality, character and leadership have been evident throughout a career in which he has regularly competed for – and won – major honours,” Lange said.

“Andy’s professionalism and commitment will also be invaluable to the development of our squad, and he shares our ambition and determination to bring success back to the club.”

Robertson is among Tottenham’s first major arrivals ahead of the new campaign as De Zerbi begins reshaping the squad in a bid to steer the club back towards the upper end of the Premier League table.
