Arsenal come from behind to defeat Southampton

Arsenal came from behind to preserve their unbeaten start to the season against winless Southampton at the Emirates Stadium.

Two goals in quick succession from Kai Havertz and Gabriel Martinelli within 10 minutes of the second half ensured the Gunners made a complete turnaround after being shocked by Cameron Archer’s opening goal for the visitors. Bukayo Saka later sealed the victory with a late strike.

This win marked Arsenal as only the second club in Premier League history to achieve 400 home victories, keeping them just one point behind league leaders Liverpool before the international break.

Southampton, still stuck on just one point after seven matches, faced relentless pressure from Arsenal from the beginning. However, they managed to hold on until halftime, albeit unconvincingly.

The Saints unexpectedly took the lead 10 minutes into the second half when Archer finished neatly on a counter-attack after Raheem Sterling, making his first league start for Arsenal, was dispossessed by Mateus Fernandes.

This setback ignited Arsenal, who responded just three minutes later when Havertz curled in a brilliant shot off the post. Martinelli then timed his run perfectly to connect with Saka’s cross at the back post.

Despite Arsenal’s inability to extend their lead, Southampton fought back with determination, hitting the woodwork twice. Dibling’s shot deflected off the post, and Adam Armstrong struck the crossbar from the ensuing corner.

However, Saka, who assisted the first two goals, capped off the scoring with a clinical finish in the closing stages, allowing Arsenal to extend their unbeaten streak in all competitions to 16 matches.
