Arsenal has announced that striker Vivianne Miedema will depart from the club at the conclusion of the season, marking the end of her seven-year tenure with the Gunners.
The Netherlands international initially joined Arsenal from Bayern Munich in 2017, amassing an impressive record of 125 goals and 50 assists in 172 appearances.
According to BBC Sport sources, Arsenal has opted not to extend Miedema’s contract, paving the way for her departure. Manchester City has reportedly shown interest in acquiring the 27-year-old once she becomes a free agent.
In a video shared on Instagram, Miedema expressed that it is time for her journey with Arsenal to reach its conclusion.
She said: “To have represented a club like this, with so much history and tradition, has been an absolute honour.
“So above all else, I would like to say thank you for making this chapter of my life so memorable.”
During her time in north London, Miedema achieved notable successes, including winning the Women’s Super League title in 2018-19 and securing three Women’s League Cups.
As the all-time leading goal-scorer in the WSL with 79 goals, she has also clinched the Golden Boot award twice for scoring the most goals in a single season.
However, Miedema faced challenges due to injury, including a ruptured anterior cruciate ligament in December 2022, which sidelined her for 10 months before her return in October 2023. Subsequently, she underwent minor knee surgery in March, limiting her playing time to just 13 games this season.
Arsenal’s sporting director, Edu, praised Miedema’s outstanding performances, noting that she has left an indelible mark and created numerous cherished memories during her tenure.
