Arsenal secured a dominant 5-1 victory over defending champions Manchester City at the Emirates on Sunday, keeping pace with Premier League leaders Liverpool.
In a battle between last season’s top two sides, the Gunners moved within six points of Liverpool, who have a game in hand.
Arsenal took the lead inside two minutes as Manuel Akanji lost possession, allowing Kai Havertz to set up Martin Ødegaard for the opener. Havertz then missed a golden chance to double the lead.
City equalised early in the second half through Erling Haaland’s 250th career club goal. However, Arsenal quickly regained control, with Thomas Partey’s shot deflecting off John Stones for 2-1.
Myles Lewis-Skelly, whose red card from last week was overturned, curled in Arsenal’s third before celebrating with Haaland’s trademark meditation pose.
Havertz made it 4-1 with a powerful finish, and teenage talent Ethan Nwaneri completed the rout in stoppage time.
The defeat leaves City in fourth place, now 15 points behind the top, effectively ending their title hopes after four successive league triumphs.
Palace Shock Man United at Old Trafford
Crystal Palace moved above Manchester United in the table after a 2-0 victory at Old Trafford, marking United’s fifth defeat in six home league games.
Jean-Philippe Mateta scored both goals in the second half, while United’s attacking threat faded after Kobbie Mainoo struck the post early on.
Lisandro Martínez’s injury added to United’s woes before Daniel Muñoz set up Mateta for his second goal.
Spurs Ease Relegation Worries
Tottenham relieved pressure on manager Ange Postecoglou with a 2-0 win at Brentford.
Vitaly Janelt’s own goal put Spurs ahead before Pape Sarr sealed the win from a Son Heung-min assist, lifting Spurs 10 points clear of the relegation zone.
