Arsenal youngster Ethan Nwaneri is reportedly considering a switch of international allegiance from England to Nigeria, with the 19-year-old currently on a season-long loan at German club Borussia Dortmund.
According to Nigerian newspaper Blueprint, Nigeria head coach Éric Chelle has previously approached the midfielder’s representatives in an attempt to convince him to commit his international future to the Super Eagles.
The report indicates that Nwaneri is receptive to the possibility of playing for Nigeria. Chelle reportedly held discussions with his agent in London as part of efforts to secure his commitment. However, neither the player nor the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has officially confirmed any agreement.
Nigerian football fans have also taken notice of Nwaneri’s recent decision to follow the Super Eagles’ official social media accounts. Nevertheless, this development does not necessarily mean he has made a final decision about his international future.
Born in England to a Nigerian father and a mother of British and French descent, Nwaneri is eligible to represent Nigeria through his paternal heritage.
The youngster has represented England at U16, U17, U19 and U21 levels. However, FIFA regulations allow players who have featured for another country at youth level to switch allegiance if they satisfy specific eligibility conditions.
Since Nwaneri has yet to feature in an official senior international match for England, he remains eligible to switch to Nigeria, subject to FIFA’s rules.
Nigeria’s interest in the midfielder is not new. Back in March 2025, reports emerged that Chelle intended to meet him in London to persuade him to represent the country.
The Super Eagles coach is keen to strengthen his team’s attacking creativity, and Nwaneri’s ability to operate as an attacking midfielder, right winger and playmaker makes him an attractive option for the national side.
Nigeria has reportedly monitored his progress in European football closely. During the second half of the 2025/26 campaign, when he was on loan at French Ligue 1 side Olympique Marseille, Chelle also watched his performances in person.
Meanwhile, England are equally interested in retaining the services of the talented youngster. Having progressed through their youth international setup, Nwaneri was invited to join the senior team’s pre-tournament training camp in Florida, United States, ahead of the 2026 World Cup.
However, participation in a training camp does not constitute an official senior international appearance, meaning the invitation does not rule out a potential switch to Nigeria.
Nwaneri joined Arsenal’s academy at just eight years old before making his senior debut in September 2022. He came on as a substitute against Brentford in the Premier League, becoming the competition’s youngest-ever player at 15 years, five months and 28 days.
Since that historic appearance, he has gradually established himself within Mikel Arteta’s first-team setup, earning opportunities in domestic and European competitions.
In January 2026, Arsenal sent the midfielder on loan to Olympique Marseille to gain valuable first-team experience. He recorded 11 appearances and two goals during his spell in France before returning to the Gunners at the end of the campaign.
On September 1, 2026, Borussia Dortmund confirmed his arrival from Arsenal on a season-long loan deal running until the conclusion of the 2026/27 season. The Bundesliga move is expected to provide another opportunity for him to develop and secure regular playing time.
Should Nwaneri eventually choose Nigeria, his versatility would offer Chelle additional attacking options, with the youngster capable of operating behind the striker, on the right flank or in a more advanced midfield role.
His potential inclusion would also intensify competition for places in the Super Eagles’ attacking department, which already features Ademola Lookman, Alex Iwobi, Samuel Chukwueze and Moses Simon.
Nigeria has previously convinced footballers who developed within England’s football system to represent the country. Ola Aina, for instance, featured for England’s youth teams before switching to Nigeria, while former Arsenal academy graduate Iwobi also opted to play for the Super Eagles.
Despite the growing speculation, Nwaneri is yet to make an official commitment to Nigeria. The ultimate decision rests with the player, while the NFF would be required to complete the necessary procedures in accordance with FIFA’s eligibility regulations.
