Arsenal’s Jesus to undergo surgery after ACL injury
Arsenal forward Gabriel Jesus is set to undergo surgery on his left knee after suffering an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury.
The 27-year-old was stretchered off during Arsenal’s FA Cup third-round defeat to Manchester United at the Emirates Stadium on Sunday.
This season, the Brazilian has featured in 27 matches across all competitions, netting seven goals.
“Gabriel Jesus has received extensive assessments, scans and specialist reviews which have confirmed an injury to the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee,” Arsenal said in a statement.
“Gabby will undergo surgery in the coming days and will soon begin his recovery and rehabilitation programme.”
Gabriel Jesus, who joined Arsenal from Manchester City for £45 million in July 2022, has scored six goals in his last seven appearances.
His injury adds to Arsenal’s growing list of sidelined players, which includes England forward Bukayo Saka, Ben White, Takehiro Tomiyasu, Ethan Nwaneri, and Riccardo Calafiori.
The Gunners currently sit second in the Premier League, six points behind leaders Liverpool, who have a game in hand. Arsenal will face north London rivals Tottenham on Wednesday.
Later this month, Arsenal return to Champions League action and will also aim to overturn a 2-0 deficit against Newcastle in the second leg of their Carabao Cup semi-final at St James’ Park on February 5.
Manager Mikel Arteta expressed concern over the severity of Jesus’s injury and confirmed the club is “actively exploring” signing options during the transfer window, especially with Bukayo Saka ruled out until March.
“It would be naive not to do that because there is always an opportunity to evolve the team and improve the squad, so yes, we are looking and let’s see what we are able to do,” Arteta said.
