Arsenal fans are concerned about Bukayo Saka’s fitness after he was forced off injured in the first half of their UEFA Champions League loss of 2-1 to Lens.
Saka was a doubt for the game after he sustained an injury during the 4-0 victory over Bournemouth. This raised concerns among most fans, but he was ultimately included in the starting lineup against the robust French team.
He played a crucial role in setting up Gabriel Jesus for the opening goal, while Adrien Thomasson responded with a goal for the home side. Shortly after, Saka signaled for a substitution and was replaced by Fabio Vieira.
A mistake by goalkeeper David Raya contributed to the first goal, and a spectacular strike from Elye Wahi led to Arsenal’s first defeat of the season in all competitions.
Concerns have arisen regarding the 22-year-old’s workload, with supporters advocating for him to take a break for either the Bournemouth or RC Lens match.
Although it initially seemed that Saka sustained an injury without any challenge, Arteta clarified the situation in an interview with TNT Football and offered further updates.
Arteta said, “It was an action. It was a backheel, and he felt something specific. It was nothing else. Obviously, he wasn’t comfortable to continue.”
Arteta was unable to say how long Saka would be out, reports have it that the injury “doesn’t look good.”
Arsenal host Premier League champions Manchester City on Sunday, and Saka’s absence could be a major blow, with left winger Gabriel Martinelli also doubtful.
Arsenal have not beaten Pep Guardiola’s City in the league since 2015, losing both home and away to their title rivals last season.
