Assistant referee Smith discharged from hospital

Assistant referee Rob Smith has been discharged from the hospital after falling ill during Tuesday’s Championship match between West Bromwich Albion and Middlesbrough.

The match at The Hawthorns was halted in the seventh minute when Smith became unwell and received initial treatment before being removed from the game.

He was taken to a hospital in Walsall for tests and has since been allowed to return home, where he is now recovering.

The Professional Game Match Officials Limited (PGMOL), the referee’s body, expressed gratitude to both clubs, the paramedics at The Hawthorns, and the staff at Manor Hospital in Walsall for their care of Rob.

Middlesbrough secured a 1-0 victory in the match, with fourth official Jacob Miles stepping in for Smith on the touchline.
