Atletico Madrid announced on Monday that they have permanently banned a fan for throwing objects onto the field during the heated derby draw against Real Madrid over the weekend.
Sunday’s match at the Estadio Metropolitano was interrupted for 15 minutes after Atletico supporters threw items, including lighters, at Real Madrid players. The game ended in a dramatic 1-1 draw, with Angel Correa scoring a late equalizer for Atletico in the 95th minute.
“Our security team is continuing to work with the police to identify others involved in the incident, and they will be permanently expelled once identified,” the club stated.
Atletico reiterated their commitment to eliminating violence and promoting the values of sportsmanship. “Our resolve to eradicate any form of violence and uphold the values of sport is unquestionable. We will continue to deploy all our resources to prevent this type of behavior,” the statement added.
Additionally, Atletico announced changes to their stadium regulations following the incident. The club will now prohibit the use of any clothing or items that obscure a person’s identity inside the stadium. This change aims to ensure fan accountability and prevent disruptive behavior.
“Anyone found violating this rule will be immediately removed from the stadium,” the club warned.
Atletico’s next home game is scheduled for October 20 against Leganes in La Liga.
