Dani Olmo and Pau Victor will be permitted to play for Barcelona after the Spanish national sports council (CSD) granted the club provisional authorization to register the two players.
Both were summer signings but had only been registered for the first half of the season due to Barcelona’s inability to meet La Liga’s wage cap restrictions.
On Saturday, the Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) and La Liga denied Barcelona’s request to register them.
However, following the club’s appeal, the CSD intervened on Wednesday, granting a precautionary measure that allows the players to participate in the short term.
Forwards Olmo, 26, and Victor, 23, will be available until the CSD delivers a final decision on Barcelona’s case against La Liga and RFEF.
“This measure, which is provisional until the appeal filed by the club and the aforementioned players is finally resolved, suspends [La Liga and RFEF’s decision], and the cancellation of the sports licenses of the aforementioned players,” the CSD said in a statement.
“It also maintains the validity of said licences until this appeal is finally resolved.”
La Liga was informed of the CSD resolution on Wednesday afternoon but is still waiting on further clarification over the details.
“The resolution was adopted without having forwarded the appeal to La Liga or the RFEF, nor granting either party the opportunity to submit their arguments. Therefore, La Liga is currently unaware of the reasoning set forth by the players and FC Barcelona in the appeal,” La Liga stated.
“La Liga will thoroughly review the content of the decision with a view to filing the appropriate appeals, while also expressing its complete disagreement with the decision.”
The decision came too late for Olmo and Victor to be eligible for selection in Wednesday’s Spanish Supercopa semi-final against Athletic Club in Saudi Arabia. However, after Barcelona’s 2-0 victory, the pair will be available for Sunday’s final against either Real Madrid or Mallorca.
Olmo, a £51m summer signing from RB Leipzig, was initially registered as a special exemption for the first half of the season due to Barcelona’s financial difficulties, which prevented them from meeting La Liga’s strict wage cap.
Requests to register the duo had previously been rejected by two courts.
Reports indicate that Barcelona has since sold VIP boxes for their new stadium, which is still under construction, for a reported €100m (£83.42m) to comply with La Liga’s financial fair play rules.
However, the paperwork was submitted three days after La Liga’s deadline.
La Liga stated that Barcelona had now met the financial requirements following the expiry of Olmo and Victor’s licenses, but regulations prevent players from “obtaining another license at the same club to which they were already linked” in the same season.
According to Spanish sources, Barcelona contended that the rule is outdated, arguing they now have the necessary funds while the transfer window is still open and should therefore be allowed to register the pair.
