Barcelona goalkeeper Ter Stegen to have knee surgery

Barcelona goalkeeper and captain Marc-Andre ter Stegen will undergo knee surgery on Monday after rupturing his patella tendon during Sunday’s La Liga win against Villarreal.

The German international was stretchered off in the first half after his right knee gave way as he landed while catching the ball.

Barcelona has stated they will provide further updates following the surgery, with no timeline set yet for the 32-year-old’s recovery.

Ter Stegen has made over 400 appearances for Barcelona since his 2014 transfer from Borussia Monchengladbach.

Hansi Flick’s side defeated Villarreal 3-1, maintaining their perfect La Liga record and extending their lead over Real Madrid to four points.
