Bayern Munich beat VfL Wolfsburg 2-1

Harry Kane remains on track to set a new Bundesliga season goal record, notching his 21st strike as Bayern Munich triumphs over Wolfsburg.

Jamal Musiala put Bayern in the lead with a header from Thomas Muller’s cross.

England captain Kane followed with a stunning 25-yard strike in his 15th Bundesliga appearance.

Wolfsburg’s Maximilian Arnold revived hope with a long-range goal just before halftime, and his injury-time equalizer was thwarted by goalkeeper Manuel Neuer.

Kane, 30, wrote on social media: “Perfect way to sign off for the winter break! Have loved my first few months at Bayern and in Munich. Looking forward to a rest, then back in the new year to go again.”

Boss Thomas Tuchel said: “If you look at his goal and the way he played in the second half, he was our first defender. How he holds on to the ball, tracks back, defends – his performances have been top.

“He’s a top personality, leader, top player – the complete package.”

The summer acquisition from Tottenham has become the first player to achieve 21 Bundesliga goals in his initial 15 games in the competition.

In the 2020-21 season, when Robert Lewandowski set a record with 41 Bundesliga goals for Bayern, he had scored 20 goals after 15 matches.

Considering both the latter part of the previous season with Tottenham and the current one, Kane has accumulated 38 league goals in 2023, placing him four goals ahead of Kylian Mbappe, who holds the second spot in Europe’s top five leagues.

With five assists to his credit, Kane has contributed to 26 Bundesliga goals this season, a figure equal to the player with the highest goal involvements in the entirety of the previous season, Randal Kolo Muani.

Despite Kane’s prolific scoring, Bayern heads into the winter break trailing surprise leaders Bayer Leverkusen by four points. Xabi Alonso’s team secured a 4-0 victory over Bochum, with Patrik Schick notching a hat-trick, marking his first three Bundesliga goals of the season.

Leverkusen remains undefeated after 25 games in all competitions, establishing a record for a German professional team at the beginning of a season.
