Bayern Munich has denounced the racist insults aimed at defender Dayot Upamecano following their 1-0 loss to Lazio in the Champions League last 16.
Upamecano, aged 25, received a red card in the 67th minute after conceding a penalty, which Ciro Immobile converted to secure the victory.
“FC Bayern strongly condemn the racist comments being directed towards Dayot Upamecano on social media,” said a statement on X.
“Anyone who comments hateful words such as these is no fan of our club.”
Upamecano’s red card implies that he will be absent for the second leg in Munich on 5th March.
Bayern Munich struggled to produce any shots on target in the initial leg, heightening the scrutiny on manager Thomas Tuchel following the defeat.
Their recent 3-0 loss to Bayer Leverkusen in the Bundesliga widened the gap to five points behind Xabi Alonso’s side in second place, and they have already been knocked out of the German Cup.
