Bayern Munich victory delays Leverkusen title celebrations

Bayern Munich postponed Bayer Leverkusen’s Bundesliga title celebrations for at least another day with a victory over relegation-threatened Cologne.

In a frustrating first half for Bayern, England captain Harry Kane and Mathys Tel both struck the post. Bayern needed just one point to delay conceding the title to Leverkusen.

However, goals from Raphael Guerreiro and Thomas Muller secured the victory for Bayern. This win leaves them trailing Bayer Leverkusen by 13 points with five games remaining.

Bayer Leverkusen, managed by Xabi Alonso, will secure their first-ever German title with a win over Werder Bremen on Sunday. They have remained unbeaten in the league so far this season and are poised to claim the championship.

Despite England captain Harry Kane’s impressive tally of 32 goals in 29 league games, Bayern’s hold on the trophy seems to be coming to an end.

Guerreiro opened the scoring with a long-range strike in the 65th minute, while Muller sealed the victory with a late goal in stoppage time. Cologne, currently second from bottom, proved to be tough opponents for Bayern.

Meanwhile, Leverkusen, who were in the relegation zone when Alonso took over in October 2022, are on track for a remarkable treble this season. They have secured a place in the German Cup final against second-tier side Kaiserslautern and won the first leg of their Europa League quarter-final against West Ham 2-0 on Thursday.

If they avoid defeat against Werder, Leverkusen will set a new Bundesliga record for the most games unbeaten (29) from the start of a season.
