Bellingham sustains calf injury during training
Real Madrid midfielder Jude Bellingham has suffered a calf injury during training, just over two weeks before England’s Nations League campaign begins.
The 21-year-old was unable to complete the club’s session on Friday. BBC Sport has reached out to Real Madrid to determine the extent of Bellingham’s injury and how long he might be sidelined.
Reports from Spain indicate that Bellingham could be out until late September, which would mean missing England’s first two matches under interim manager Lee Carsley.
The Three Lions are set to face the Republic of Ireland on 7 September and Finland on 10 September in the Nations League.
In a statement, Real Madrid confirmed that Bellingham underwent medical tests on Friday for an issue with his right calf, and his progress will be monitored.
Bellingham expressed his frustration on social media, saying, “Nothing I hate more than missing games, but I’m trying to see the positive side. Maybe my body is telling me it needs a bit more rest after a busy year. I’m very frustrated, but I’ll be supporting the lads like a fan until I can rejoin them in my best and strongest form.”
Lee Carsley, who was appointed interim manager earlier this month following Gareth Southgate’s resignation after Euro 2024, will name his squad for the Nations League fixtures on 29 August.
Carsley will be assisted by former England left-back Ashley Cole, with ex-England centre-back Joleon Lescott and the Football Association’s head of coaching, Tim Dittmer, also joining his backroom team.
Bellingham, who scored 23 goals in 42 appearances during his debut season at Real Madrid last term, helped the club secure a La Liga and Champions League double.
He recently started in the 1-1 La Liga draw against Mallorca and was part of the Super Cup victory against Atalanta earlier this month.
