Spain star Aitana Bonmati says she’s feeling strong again after recovering from viral meningitis, just in time for Friday’s UEFA Women’s Euro 2025 quarter-final clash against hosts Switzerland in Bern.

The reigning Ballon d’Or Féminin winner returned to the starting lineup during Spain’s 3-1 group stage win over Italy, which capped their dominant run in Group B with 9 points and 14 goals scored.

“It came out of nowhere. I felt fine, then suddenly I was sick. It’s been frustrating,” Bonmati told reporters.
“But now, I feel grateful I can play. I want to enjoy this — until now, I haven’t been able to do much.”

Swiss Banking on Home Support

Switzerland defender Noelle Maritz says the home crowd at Wankdorf Stadium could give them an edge as they aim for their first-ever semi-final appearance in a major women’s tournament.

“Playing in front of our fans has been unforgettable,” Maritz said. “The atmosphere will push us forward.”

The Swiss qualified from Group A after a dramatic draw with Finland, and while Spain are favourites, coach Pia Sundhage says the pressure is on the World Cup champions.

“We’re improving, and we’ve learned to manage the pressure,” Sundhage said. “It’s a huge opportunity.”

What’s at Stake?

The winner of this match will face France or Germany in the semi-finals next Wednesday in Zurich, bringing Spain closer to their first European title or launching Switzerland into historic territory.
