Bordeaux forward Alberth Elis has been placed in a medically induced coma at the hospital following a severe head injury sustained in a collision with an opponent.

On Sunday, the club announced that he underwent surgery after the incident during the match against Guingamp on Saturday.

The French Ligue 2 game was halted for eight minutes after Elis, 28, collided heads with defender Donatien Gomis within the first 40 seconds of play.

Bordeaux has stated that they cannot provide any prognosis regarding Elis’ condition.

“We warmly thank all those who have shown their support for Alberth and those close to him, in particular the clubs across France,” said Bordeaux president Gerard Lopez.”Your words warm our hearts and are a great strength in the fight that Alberth is waging.”

Gomis completed the remainder of the match, despite the collision.

“I think he [Elis] hits the ball first, I hit him,” said Gomis. “For a second, I was also in a daze. He lost consciousness. I hope he gets better.”

With 64 caps, the striker has 13 goals in 13 games for Honduras. Elis moved to Europe and joined Boavista after spending three years with the Houston Dynamo of Major League Soccer (MLS).

Before joining Bordeaux in 2021, he played for one season in Portugal. In 60 games since then, he has scored 15 goals.
