Bournemouth midfielder Hamed Traore will be sidelined for an extended period due to a bout of malaria, according to manager Andoni Iraola

After receiving treatment in the hospital following the November international break, the 23-year-old Ivory Coast international has been omitted from the squad for the Africa Cup of Nations starting on January 13.

“The past few weeks have been a tough situation for him personally,” said Iraola.

“We have to make sure that he is OK and he recovers properly.”

Malaria, a tropical disease transmitted through mosquitoes, is non-contagious, with symptoms typically manifesting between seven to 18 days after infection.

Hamed Traore, who initially joined Bournemouth on loan from Sassuolo in January before a permanent deal valued at approximately £20m was finalized in the summer, has had limited playing time. With just 10 Premier League appearances and his last game for Bournemouth dating back to November 1, Traore featured in Ivory Coast’s triumphs over Seychelles and Gambia on November 17 and 20, respectively.

Bournemouth, currently positioned 12th in the table, is scheduled to face Tottenham on Sunday.
