Brazil to face Uruguay in quarters after Colombia draw

Brazil will take on Uruguay in the Copa America quarter-finals after being held to a draw by Colombia in their final group-stage match.

Five-time World Cup champions Brazil knew that a victory in California would secure the top spot in the group. They started strong, with Barcelona winger Raphinha scoring a stunning free-kick to give his team the lead.

However, Colombia, unbeaten since February 2022, responded decisively and equalized just before half-time through a close-range strike from Crystal Palace defender Daniel Munoz.

Colombia, who have won the competition once, nearly secured the win when striker Rafael Borre missed a close-range chance off a Johan Mojica cross with six minutes remaining.

The draw means Colombia tops Group D, earning a favorable quarter-final match against Panama, while second-place Brazil will face 15-time winners Uruguay.

Real Madrid winger Vinicius Jr will miss Brazil’s quarter-final due to receiving his second yellow card of the tournament.

In the other group match, Costa Rica defeated Paraguay 2-1 with goals from Francisco Calvo and Josimar Alcocer. Despite the victory, Costa Rica needed additional results to go their way to advance and ultimately finished a point behind Brazil, missing out on the quarter-finals.

The tournament’s quarter-finals begin on Friday, with defending champions Argentina facing Ecuador (02:00 BST).
