Manchester United have dismissed manager Ruben Amorim, with Darren Fletcher appointed to oversee the team for Wednesday’s Premier League clash against Burnley.
Amorim had suggested on Friday that his relationship with the club’s hierarchy was under pressure, hinting that he would not receive full backing in the transfer market.
After Sunday’s 1-1 draw with Leeds, the Portuguese coach took another swipe at senior figures at Old Trafford, saying he wanted to function as a manager “not the coach” and indicating he was prepared to walk away when his contract ends in 18 months.
Less than a day later, United confirmed that Amorim had “departed his role as head coach of Manchester United” after 14 months in charge.
“With Manchester United sitting sixth in the Premier League, the club’s leadership has reluctantly made the decision that it is the right time to make a change,” the club said.
“This will give the team the best opportunity of the highest possible Premier League finish.
“The club would like to thank Ruben for his contribution to the club and wishes him well for the future.”
Sources told BBC Sport that the club believed there was a lack of clear development or progress this season under Amorim.
The 40-year-old was appointed in November 2024 and recorded 25 wins from 63 matches in charge of the Red Devils.
Amorim’s 14-month spell is the briefest tenure of a permanent Manchester United manager since David Moyes was dismissed just eight months into his reign in 2014.
