Brentford come from behind twice to deny Bournemouth three points

The Cherries came back from behind to lead 2-1 with goals from Justin Kluivert and Marcus Tavernier but Kevin Schade’s double for Brentford denied them three points on Saturday.

After a bright start, Brentford’s momentum had begun to fade until Schade put them 1-0 up in the 34th minute.

Adrien Truffert gave away possession cheaply in the final third and Yehor Yarmoliuk floated in a cross that was met with a thumping header from the German winger for his second goal in three matches.

But their lead only lasted four minutes as Kluivert got on the end of a loose ball in the box and fired into the bottom corner with his left foot.

Rose’s side then went ahead seven minutes into the second half through Tavernier’s third goal of the season.

Antonio Silva’s lofted pass into the area was delightfully controlled by Evanilson who teed up Tavernier for a powerful finish beyond Caoimhin Kelleher.

But Brentford also only needed four minutes to restore parity as Bournemouth goalkeeper Djordje Petrovic played a pass straight at Schade, who lobbed the goalkeeper to salvage a point with his second of the game.

Cherries’ substitute Ben Gannon-Doak’s deflected effort rattled the woodwork in the dying seconds, but a winner proved elusive for both sides.

Bournemouth have three points from four matches while Keith Andrews’ Brentford have six.

Rose will be wondering what he must do to get that first league win on the board.

Bournemouth were the first to score in each of their opening three league fixtures but still arrived at this game searching for a victory under their new head coach.

Tuesday’s 4-0 win against Lincoln City in the Carabao Cup finally handed the German his first win as the Cherries boss and was a performance that raised hopes they could carry the momentum into the weekend.

However, they had to battle their way to a point after going behind.

And the hosts will feel they had done enough to win as they passed up a number of gilt-edged chances over the 90 minutes.

Silva’s free header went wide early on, while Rayan failed to hit the target from the rebound after Kelleher’s save shortly after Brentford opened the scoring.

Alex Scott also ballooned an effort over after excellent work from Evanilson and then Gannon-Doak couldn’t find that last-gasp winner.

Bournemouth’s attention will now turn to their continental debut at Real Sociedad in their Europa League opener on Thursday.

Schade scored a hat-trick in the 4-1 win against Bournemouth last December and was their tormentor again on Saturday.

He headed in the opener before capitalising on a dreadful mistake from Petrovic to complete his brace in the 56th minute, ensuring the Bees remain unbeaten in 12 games against the Cherries since 2014.

Andrews’ side seemed eager to keep that unbeaten record going as Igor Thiago and Keane Lewis-Potter went close to an opener inside three minutes.

With the score at 1-1 deep into first-half stoppage time, the Bees were convinced they had a penalty as Kristoffer Ajer’s shot struck Truffert’s arm, but referee Jarred Gillett deemed the defender to be too close to react and waved away the appeals.

Andrews’ side were fortunate to escape with a point and familiar problems remain as they let a lead slip again – for the third time in as many matches.

But three draws and a win from their opening four matches will be an encouraging return for Andrews, who will celebrate his 46th birthday on Sunday.
