Brighton hold Arsenal to 1-1, dent gunners’ title hopes

Arsenal’s Premier League title ambitions suffered another major setback as Joao Pedro’s controversial penalty secured a 1-1 draw for Brighton on Saturday, leaving the Gunners five points behind leaders Liverpool, who hold two games in hand.

With Arsenal’s attacking options depleted by injuries and illness, 17-year-old Ethan Nwaneri took centre stage, showcasing his talent with a composed finish in the 16th minute. Latching onto Mikel Merino’s lofted pass, the youngster outran Brighton’s defence and fired a low shot into the far corner.

The Gunners controlled the first half but lacked the cutting edge to extend their lead. Early in the second half, a contentious decision proved costly. William Saliba was penalised for a minimal clash of heads with Joao Pedro, who converted the resulting penalty to level the match.

Despite late substitutions by Mikel Arteta, including Martin Odegaard and Gabriel Martinelli, Arsenal struggled to regain control. Brighton, winless in eight matches, nearly snatched victory when Yakuba Minteh’s effort slid just wide of the post.

Liverpool, who face Manchester United on Sunday, can extend their lead at the top and move closer to their 20th top-flight title. For Arsenal, the draw highlights the challenges ahead as they contend with a depleted squad and mounting pressure in the title race.

Brighton’s point moves them back into 10th place, while Arsenal must regroup to keep their fading title hopes alive.
