Brighton win against Roma but exit Europa League

Brighton’s journey in the Europa League came to an end in the last-16 phase, despite securing a victory over Roma at the Amex Stadium.

Roberto de Zerbi’s team displayed resilience throughout and had their opportunities, but a 4-0 loss in the first leg at the Stadio Olimpico made the task insurmountable.

In an intense match, Danny Welbeck’s magnificent curling shot just eight minutes before halftime boosted Brighton’s morale.

Despite continuous pressure, the home team couldn’t come close to achieving a remarkable comeback.

Brighton was able to stay in the game thanks to a fantastic overhead kick by Roma’s Sardar Azmoun that was controversially disallowed for a high foot, but they were unable to take advantage of their subsequent opportunities.

As the match drew to a somewhat inevitable end, Mile Svilar of Roma denied Simon Adingra a header from close range at point blank range. Mile Svilar also made a save from Igor. Jan Paul van Hecke also missed two good header efforts.

Brighton’s learning experience

Brighton’s initial foray into European competition concluded with disappointment, yet it was punctuated by numerous unforgettable moments that could prove invaluable should they embark on such an adventure again.

Commencing with a defeat at home against AEK Athens, Brighton proceeded to triumph both at home and away against Ajax, while also exacting revenge on the Greek side in an away fixture. A draw in Marseille preceded a triumphant victory over the French team at the Amex.

However, their campaign was effectively dashed by a resounding defeat in Rome, where the Italian team’s aggregate advantage proved insurmountable despite Brighton’s determined efforts.

Nevertheless, Brighton’s supporters remained fully immersed in the essence of what they termed their “European tour,” relishing in the plethora of thrilling moments and eagerly anticipating a potential recurrence in the near future.

Despite the setback, De Zerbi’s squad still harbors significant aspirations for the current season, with the prospect of securing European qualification once more firmly within reach.

Currently occupying the eighth position in the Premier League, Brighton trails sixth-placed Manchester United by a mere five points. Their fervent and talented manager undoubtedly has his sights set on a strong finish, aiming to revive the ambiance of European glory nights within the stadium next season.

As the campaign drew to a close, Brighton’s loyal supporters vocally honored both the manager and players who had guided them on this memorable journey.
