Bruno Fernandes has been named the Sir Matt Busby Player of the Year for 2025 after another outstanding season for Manchester United. The Portuguese midfielder once again produced impressive individual displays and was overwhelmingly voted the club’s best player by fans.

With the latest honour, Fernandes has now won the Manchester United Player of the Year award five times, surpassing David De Gea and Cristiano Ronaldo to become the first player to achieve the feat.

The Manchester United No. 8 scored eight goals this season, but his creativity stood out even more. Fernandes registered 20 assists across all competitions, including 19 in the Premier League, leaving him just one short of matching the league’s single-season assist record.

Thierry Henry and Kevin De Bruyne each recorded 20 Premier League assists in a single campaign during the 2002/03 and 2019/20 seasons respectively. With two league matches still to play, Fernandes remains in contention to equal or surpass the milestone.

Across 15 matches under Carrick, Fernandes played a key role in helping Manchester United secure 10 wins, as the club sealed qualification for next season’s Champions League ahead of schedule.

He had earlier been recognised as the Football Writers’ Association Footballer of the Year. Now, after claiming the club’s top individual honour again, Fernandes has moved beyond the previous four-award record jointly held by De Gea and Ronaldo.

Fernandes first claimed the Sir Matt Busby award in 2020 after making an immediate impact under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer following his arrival at Old Trafford.

He retained the award the following season after contributing 28 goals in 58 appearances, still his highest goal tally in a Manchester United campaign.

Ronaldo and Marcus Rashford later won the honour in subsequent years. In 2024, after Manchester United lifted the FA Cup at Wembley, Fernandes once again emerged as the fans’ favourite.

With another title added to his collection, Fernandes becomes only the second Manchester United player after De Gea to win the award three consecutive times, further cementing his legacy at the club.
