CAF Awards: Super Falcons win Women’s Team of the Year

The Super Falcons were voted the Women’s Team of the Year at the CAF 2023 Awards, following an excellent performance at the World Cup earlier this year.

Nigeria’s brave ladies were eliminated from the competition in the round of 16. They were defeated by England on penalties after normal and extra time finished in a draw.

The Super Falcons had not lost a match in their previous three group games. They drew Olympic winners Canada, surprised co-hosts Australia, and settled for a point against Ireland.

The Super Falcons beat South Africa and Morocco, fellow World Cup campaigners, for the prize on Monday night. With the win in the Moroccan city of Marrakech, Nigeria are now the most-awarded team in the category having gotten it five times.

Monday’s feat is the second National Team of the Year award in a row for the record African champions. They last won it in 2018.

The award is a morale booster for the team ahead of the CAF Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (AWCON) billed for the North African country next year. Nigeria will be eyeing a victory in the competition after they finished an abysmal third in the last edition held in 2022.
