Cape Verde goalkeeper Vozinha has emerged as one of the surprise stars of the 2026 FIFA World Cup after his standout display against Spain triggered a dramatic rise in his social media following.

Before Cape Verde’s opening match against the European champions, the 40-year-old had slightly more than 50,000 Instagram followers. Within 24 hours of the encounter, his follower count had surged to 6.3 million, making him one of the tournament’s most talked-about figures.

The veteran goalkeeper played a decisive role in Cape Verde’s historic 0-0 draw against Spain in Atlanta, helping the tournament debutants secure their first-ever World Cup point.

Under constant pressure from Spain’s attack, Vozinha made seven saves and denied several high-profile players, including substitute Lamine Yamal.

His performance earned him the Player of the Match award, and he was visibly emotional after the final whistle.

“He was overwhelmed with emotion,” Cape Verde coach Bubista said. “He has struggled throughout all these years to be here on this stage. Those were tears of resilience.”

The achievement marks the latest chapter in an unconventional football career.

Born in Mindelo, Cape Verde, Vozinha became a professional footballer at 25 when he joined Batuque in 2007 — the same year Yamal was born. He later played in Portugal, Angola, Moldova, Cyprus and Slovakia, winning the Cypriot Cup with AEL Limassol in the 2018-19 season.

Although he spent much of his club career outside the spotlight, he has been a key figure for Cape Verde since 2012 and played a major role in the nation’s qualification for its first World Cup.

Ahead of the tournament, he described the event as “the most important moment of our lives.” Following the draw with Spain, he reflected on the significance of the occasion.

“I have worked my whole life for this moment,” Vozinha said after being named man of the match.

“I’m 40 years old. I thought about leaving football, but I continued because of this dream. This award is for all my teammates because without them nothing would be possible.”

The goalkeeper also revealed that his emotional reaction after the game was linked to thoughts of family members who could not share the moment with him.

“I cried because I grew up with my grandparents and they are no longer here,” he said. “They were everything to me. I also cried because my mum couldn’t be here because of visa issues. I would have loved for her to witness this.”

His remarkable performance quickly captured global attention, with Brazilian broadcaster CazéTV encouraging fans to follow him on Instagram. The response was immediate, as his follower count jumped from around 50,000 before the match to 6.3 million.

Now one of the breakout stars of the tournament, Vozinha will look to continue his impressive run when Cape Verde face Uruguay on Sunday in Miami.

After years of travelling across leagues and countries, the experienced goalkeeper has become one of the World Cup’s most popular figures, with his story continuing to inspire football fans around the world.
