Lee Carsley is expected to serve as the interim manager of the England men’s senior team for their Nations League matches against the Republic of Ireland and Finland next month.
Carsley led England Under-21s to victory in the 2023 European Championship, their first win in the tournament in 39 years.
Gareth Southgate resigned as England manager two days after their defeat to Spain in the 2024 Euros final last month.
The transition from under-21s manager to interim manager of the senior team is a familiar path, with Howard Wilkinson, Stuart Pearce, and Southgate all having taken charge of the Young Lions before stepping up.
Southgate eventually secured the job permanently, leading the team for eight years and reaching significant milestones, including a World Cup semi-final in 2018, a World Cup quarter-final in 2022, and Euros finals in 2021 and 2024.
The Football Association has been searching for a permanent replacement, even posting a job advert on their website.
While the FA has not commented on the search for Southgate’s replacement, it has indicated that it has an “interim solution in place.”
Carsley, 50, is a former Premier League midfielder who played for clubs including Derby and Everton during his 17-year career. He moved into management, taking caretaker roles at Coventry, Brentford, and Birmingham before joining the England set-up in 2020.
