Chelsea defeat Spurs, closing gap to League Leaders Liverpool

Chelsea fought back from two goals down to beat Tottenham 4-3 on Sunday, narrowing the gap to Premier League leaders Liverpool to just four points.

Spurs surged ahead with an early 2-0 lead, but Enzo Maresca’s side flipped the game on its head, scoring four times, including two penalties by England forward Cole Palmer, before Son Heung-min’s late goal.

Maresca’s attacking style paid off as Chelsea extended their unbeaten Premier League streak to seven matches. Jadon Sancho’s long-range strike sparked the comeback, with Palmer calmly converting two penalties and Enzo Fernandez adding another.

Chelsea are now just four points behind Liverpool, who have a game in hand after their match at Everton was postponed due to high winds.

Son’s 96th-minute goal offered little consolation for Spurs, who have won just once in seven games and sit 11th in the table. Ange Postecoglou faced an angry response from supporters following the loss, which compounded a dismal week after defeat to Bournemouth.

Despite flashes of brilliance earlier this season, including wins over Manchester City and Manchester United, Spurs faltered. Goals from Dominic Solanke and Dejan Kulusevski gave them an early advantage, but Chelsea wrestled back control in a thrilling encounter.

Postecoglou’s side rued missed chances, hitting the crossbar and squandering key opportunities, while Chelsea’s resilience shone through. Palmer’s creativity and clinical finishing sealed the victory, with his Panenka-style penalty underlining Chelsea’s dominance.

The win solidifies Chelsea’s status as potential title challengers and heaps pressure on Postecoglou as Tottenham’s struggles persist.
