Chelsea’s Delap injured in goalless draw with Bournemouth

Chelsea striker Liam Delap suffered a shoulder injury during a dull 0-0 draw against Bournemouth in the Premier League.

The England Under-21 forward was taken off after several physical clashes with Bournemouth defender Marcos Senesi, who also later exited the match after overstretching in the second half.

Both teams lacked threat in attack despite Chelsea welcoming back Cole Palmer, who made his first start since 20 September after recovering from a groin issue followed by a fractured toe in November. He lasted just under an hour.

Bournemouth believed they had taken an early lead in the fifth minute when Antoine Semenyo reacted quickly to finish from close range after Evanilson’s blocked shot. But VAR spotted Evanilson marginally offside in the build-up, and the goal was overturned.

The home side were superior in the opening 45 minutes, with Semenyo impressing again amid ongoing interest from top clubs. He forced a save from distance and nearly provided a tap-in for Evanilson.

Chelsea created chances of their own through Marcus Tavernier and Alex Jimenez, while Marc Cucurella nodded just over from a Pedro Neto cross. Delap also had an effort stopped shortly before his injury-enforced withdrawal.

Chelsea improved after the interval and came closest when Alejandro Garnacho headed against the post. But most of their shots were from long range, with attempts from Neto, Palmer, Guiu and Enzo Fernández failing to find the target.

Both sides made attacking substitutions: Bournemouth introduced David Brooks, Amine Adli and striker Enes Unal, while Chelsea brought on Joao Pedro and Estevão Willian. Despite increased changes, neither side produced enough quality to break the deadlock.

Bournemouth rarely threatened after the break apart from Semenyo’s sharp run and strike, which goalkeeper Robert Sánchez kept out. Nevertheless, Andoni Iraola’s side will take positives from the performance, though they are now winless in six league games. Chelsea, meanwhile, extend their winless run to three matches, weakening recent talk of a possible title push.

Bournemouth Analysis: Positive Display, But Injuries Piling Up

The Cherries began the season strongly, reaching second place in October. But their recent dip has frustrated supporters, especially following a narrow midweek loss to Everton. Iraola criticised his team for lacking intensity in that match.

Against Chelsea, however, Bournemouth rediscovered their aggressive press and high-energy style. They dominated the first half but continue to struggle in attack—Evanilson has only one league goal this season, while Semenyo, despite his excellent performance, has gone seven games without a goal or assist.

Their growing injury list deepened with Senesi’s latest issue. He joins Veljko Milosavljevic, Ryan Christie and Ben Doak on the sidelines. Lewis Cook remains suspended, though star midfielder Tyler Adams is expected to return for the next match against Manchester United.

While Bournemouth urgently need key players back, they can draw confidence from their improved showing.

Chelsea Analysis: Neto Stands Out in a Flat Attack

Chelsea’s longest goal-scoring streak in the Premier League—13 games—came to an end after another lacklustre attacking display.

Following Wednesday’s 3-1 defeat at Leeds, the Blues failed to score in all competitions for the first time since their opening-day draw with Crystal Palace.

Palmer looked rusty on his return, Garnacho offered little threat aside from hitting the post, and Delap struggled before his injury. Neto was Chelsea’s only consistent creative spark.

The Portuguese winger created their best moments: he laid on chances for Cucurella and Delap in the first half, struck a shot of his own, and supplied the cross for Garnacho’s header that hit the post.

Chelsea’s attacking substitutes—Guiu, Pedro and Willian—made minimal impact.

Despite recent conversations about a title challenge, Chelsea have mostly suffered this season due to defensive lapses rather than attacking issues. But Delap’s injury and their blunt attack now create a new concern for manager Enzo Maresca.

“We are going to try to score on Tuesday but important to keep a clean sheet,” Maresca said ahead of their Champions League trip to face Atalanta.
