Commonwealth Games: Meet the 12 fantastic Nigerian ladies who showed the world that ‘What a man can do, a woman can do better’

The 22nd Commonwealth games which took place in Birmingham, uUnited Kingdom and ended on the 8th of August had Team Nigeria winning 12 gold medals.

The Nigerian team earned 12 gold, 9 silver, and 14 bronze medals tosurpass the 1994 Victoria Games. Female athletes representing the country won all the gold medals to the admiration of the world.

At the games, Nigeria also finished as the best-rank African Country on the medals table, taking the 7th position.

Below are the list of the 12 fantastic Nigerian female gold medalists in the 2022 Commonwealth games;

1. AMUSAN OLUWATOBILOBA

The current Commonwealth Games champion is the present global champion. The 25-year-old Ogun state indigene set a games record by winning the 100-meter hurdles in 12.30 seconds.

 

2. FAVOR OFILI, TOBI AMUSAN, ROSEMARY CHUKUWUMA, NZUBECHI GRACE NWOKOCHA

These four Nigerian female athlete won gold for the country in the Women’s 4 x 100m Relay – Final in a new African record of 42.30 seconds.

 

3. ESE BRUME

Brume continued her remarkable streak of medaling in every competition in which she has represented Nigeria. With a 7.00m leap, she achieved gold at the Commonwealth Games. She is 26 years old and hails from Ughelli part of Delta state.

 

4. MERCY GENESIS MIESINNEI

After winning gold at the 2015 All African Games, 24 year oldGenesis moved up to the 50kg weight division. She won a gold medal at the  Women’s Freestyle 50 kg.

 

5. OBORUDUDU BLESSING

The 33-year-old gold champion from the Gold Coast Games successfully defended her Olympic silver medal in the final category of the 68kg Women’s Wrestling.

 

6. ODUNAYO ADEKUOROYE

Minister lauds Adekuroye for Gold feat in Rome

Adekuoroye atoned for her Olympic defeat in 2020 by winning gold twice at the Commonwealth Games. She took part in the Women’s 57kg Wrestling.

 

7. RAFIATU FOLASHADE LAWAL

25-year-old Lawal has won four gold medals from international competitions, including her maiden gold at the Commonwealth Games and her first at the African Games in Rabat in 2019. She also won gold at the African and Commonwealth Championships in 2021. Lawal lifted 206kg in the women’s 59kg final.

 

8. ADIJAT OLARINOYE Weightlifting (55kg)

Adijat Adenike Olarinoye is the first athlete to win Nigeria first gold medal at the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham.

Olarinoye who is 23 years old lifted a total of 203kg to win gold at the women 55kg – Final.

 

9. FOLASHADE OLUWAFEMIAYO

Alice Folashade Oluwafemiayo won gold for Team Nigeria in the Women’s Heavyweight – Final on Thursday 4 August, 2022. The 37 years old Paralympic champion set a new Commonwealth Games record and smash the women’s -86kg world record to win the gold medal.

 

10. EUCHARIA IYIAZI F55-57 Shot Put

48 year old Eucharia Njideka Iyazi won a gold medal at theWomen’s F55-57 Shot Put – Final in Birmingham. She won with a throw of 10.03m. At the Olympic Games in 2008, she started her gold medal journey. From the Olympic Games in 2012, 2016, and 2020, she has three bronze medals.

 

11. CHIOMA ONYEKWERE

Chioma Onyekwere made history as the first Nigerian to win the women Discus Throw gold medal at the Commonwealth Games. With a throw of 61.70m, she became the second African female to win gold after Elizna Naude of South Africa.

 

12. GOODNESS NWACHUKWU  – Discus Throw

Goodness Chiemerie Nwachukwu won a gold medal at the Women’s Discus Throw F42-44/61-64 – Final. The 23 years old threw 36.56m to clinch a gold medal for Nigeria.
